Xwemalhkwu Hero Stories

The Xwémalhkwu First Nation (HFN) is thrilled to announce the book launch for “Xwémalhkwu Hero Stories: A Graphic Novel”.

The official launch of a graphic novel based on sacred recordings of Elders will take place on November 22nd from 10am to 12pm, at the Campbell River Coast Discovery Inn (975 Shoppers Row).

During the book launch, 100 copies will be given to the Nation to celebrate and honour this amazing accomplishment.

Xwémalhkwu Hero Stories is based on recordings of Homalco Elders from the early 90’s that were then produced into a mini podcast series by 100.7 FM the Raven. The three stories illustrated in the graphic novel depict historic moments of Coast Salish history. Indigenous graphic artists who are featured include: Alina Pete, Valen Onstine and Gord Hill.

“Thanks to the artists, partners and funders of this project, this novel will be a source to educate and inspire youth in the community to learn some of the historic and heartfelt stories from their direct relatives. As far as we know, this type of graphic novel is the first of its kind.” -Tchadas Leo, Project Manager & Lead Editor

The Nation also wants to inform all media and all those interested in purchasing a copy of the graphic novel that there will be a follow-up press release in the coming months after the Nation decides on the best form of distribution for the public to access it.

This project was managed by national award-winning Podcaster and CHEK Journalist Tchadas Leo from the HFN along with support from Elizabeth “Biz” Nijdam, a UBC Assistant Professor and Director of the UBC Comics Studies Cluster, and Education without Borders co-founders, Cecil and Ruth Hershler.

The project would not be possible without the guidance and collaboration of HFN Elders and Knowledge Keeper

We ask that the media confirm their attendance by November 20th by 5:00 pm. Any media that cannot make the date and time, a media package will be provided and remote interviews will be made available.
